Founded by trumpet virtuoso Eddie Russell, Community Music Inc. (CMI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that promotes social harmony and educational enrichment through music.
CMI seeks to improve the quality of music produced in the Virgin Islands by creating positive spaces for people of all ages to engage with local Latin, Jazz and Quelbe music. By making local music accessible and free, CMI celebrates and encourages creative expression.
Since 2013, CMI has offered a community event — Jazz in the Park — which takes place on the last Friday evening of every month at the Christiansted Fort around the gazebo. The event is family-friendly and free & open to anyone who wishes to attend.
Musicians are welcome to come with their instruments and play in a spontaneous jam session, and children are encouraged to explore music as a hobby. The purpose of these community concerts is to open the minds of attendees to the art, joy and language of love that music provides.
In 2020, CMI will introduce “Crucian Kids Rock!“ — a free after school music program that will bring together eager youngsters, musically talented teen mentors, and master musicians of St. Croix for the continuation of Quelbe, the official traditional music of the Virgin Islands.
The ultimate goal of Community Music Inc. is to use music to bridge the social gaps that exist in the Virgin Islands.
